Let's Talk: Reflexology

What Is Reflexology and How Does It Work?

Reflexology is a type of massage that focuses on your feet, hands, and ears.

The idea behind reflexology is that by applying various amounts of pressure to the reflexes of these body parts, various organs and body systems receive a range of health benefits.

For example, a human touch on your ears, feet, or hands may help calm the central nervous system, promoting relaxation, thus reducing stress.

There are a few scientific studies that have linked reflexology to different health benefits, these include:

  • Reduction in stress and anxiety

  • Reduction in pain

  • A lift in mood

  • An improvement in general well-being

While there aren't many scientific studies around reflexology and the benefits it has as an effective treatment for medical conditions, reflexology does bring value as a complementary therapy to help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Which is probably where the phrase "We all love a good foot rub" comes from, because when we think about it, who doesn't enjoy a good old foot rub!

If you would like to know more about this type of treatment, or would like to include it in your next session, talk to your therapist on your next visit.
