Post-Massage Care

Just been in for a massage? Do you feel relaxed or a bit tender? These are good signs of your body reacting well to the treatment. But while you were feeling good about having received a massage treatment, did you remember the post-massage advice given by your therapist? If you forgot, that's okay. It's easy to forget things. I forget where I put my car keys sometimes, but thanks to an app on my phone, I can ping it so it makes a noise so I can find them again.

That's what this article is for.

To help jog the memory, here are a few post-massage recommendations:

NUMBER 1: DRINK WATER

Besides quenching that thirst, drinking water helps re-hydrate your body after a massage. Massage actually dehydrates the body. How? Science. As your tight muscles are worked, blood starts to flow again to those areas delivering oxygen and fluids to the muscle tissue. Any amount of water that is transferred to the muscle is removed from your blood stream, effectively causing the percentage of water in your blood stream to decrease, or in other words, dehydrate you.

Therefore we recommend drinking water BEFORE and AFTER a massage treatment to give your body want it needs.

NUMBER 2: STRETCH

In addition to having your muscles worked by your massage therapist, home care greatly increases the benefits. Stretching helps to realign your muscle fibres and improve muscle recovery.

To help with this, we provide custom exercises and stretches that can you can do from home to help maximise your treatment and recovery. Ask one of our therapists about it either next time you're in, or just flick us an email.

NUMBER 3: EAT

Massage therapy has a big effect on the body's circulation and stimulates digestion.

So give your body the fuel it needs to keep going. Bring a snack to your next appointment, whether it's a banana or some raw almonds. Keep the meals light.

NUMBER 4: REST

Aim to have a relaxing atmosphere after your massage treatment. The idea behind this is to help prolong your sense of deep relaxation for as long as possible. If you need a nap, have a nap. Listen to your body if it feels tired. Give yourself the time to recover, repair, and re-tune yourself.

NUMBER 5: BATH

Having a warm bath encourages rest. Adding Epsom salts can help heal any aches and pains, opening up your blood vessels, and increasing circulation. A warm shower can also do the trick.

But the main gist is to stay warm.

While there are many other recommendations for post-massage care, these are the main ones we've picked out that can assist in maximising your massage treatment.

If you have any questions, ask your therapist the next time you call in.
